Das Gerund wird durch Anhängen der Endung -ing an den Verbstamm gebildet.
Es ist eine nicht konjugierte Verbform, d.h. es beinhaltet keinen Personenbezug oder eine Zeitangabe.
Es gibt eine Vielzahl von Anwendungsfällen für das Gerund.
Das Gerund als Subjekt
Das Gerund kann als substantiviertes Verb genutzt werden. Im Deutschen wird das mit dem Großschreiben des Infinitivs gebildet wie z.B. das Schreiben.
- Writing books is not always fun. Das Bücherschreiben macht nicht immer Spass.
- Reading good books is pleasant. Das Lesen guter Bücher ist angenehm.
- The learning of languages is sometimes fun. Das Lernen neuer Sprachen macht manchmal Spass.
Das Gerund nach Präpositionen
Nach bestimmten Präpositionen wird häufig das Gerund verwendet:
after, before, instead of, because of.
Das Gerund nach Substantiv + Präpositionen
Das Gerund steht nach Substantiven, die mit einer Präposition verbunden sind. Hierzu zählen unter anderem:
chance of, danger of, difficulty in, intention of, habit of, hope of, objection to, reason for, trouble in, way of.
- There is no chance of winning this game.
- I take great interest in getting to know John better.

Das Gerund nach transitiven Verben
Es gibt eine Reihe von transitiven Verben nach denen das Gerund steht:
to avoid, to delay, escape, finish, forgive, give up, keep on, prevent, resist, risk, save, suggest, stop.
- I don't mind helping him out.
- I gave up smoking yesterday.
- I like watching Sci-Fi movies.
- My son hates getting up early in the morning.
Das Gerund nach Verben des Erlaubens
Nach Verben des Erlaubens oder Empfehlenst steht das Gerund oft. to advise, to permit, to recommend, to allow.
- The police does not permit driving too fast.
- Jay does not allow running in the house.
- I recommend taking the exam early in the morning.
Das Gerund nach Verb + Präposition
Nach Verben, die eng mit einer Präposition verbunden sind, steht das Gerund. Hierzu zählen: to adjust to, to agree with, to believe in, to care for, to depend on, to give up, to die of, to insist on, to pay for, to succeed in, to worry about.
- I apologize for being late.
- I believe in getting up early.
- He keeps on drinking his special juice.
Das Gerund nach Adjektiven
Nach Adjektiven, die eng mit einer Präposition verbunden sind, steht das Gerund. Hierzu zählen:
angry about, afraid of, crazy about, dissppointed about, famous for, fond of, good at, impressed by, keen on, sad about, tired of, worried about.
- John is afraid of flying.
- Lisa is capable of passing the exam with good grades.
- I am happy about solving the problem all by myself.
Das Gerund anstelle von Nebensätzen
Oft wird das Gerund verwendet anstelle eines Nebensatzes.
- Peter received a price for winning the match. => Peter received a price because he won the match.
- After waking up, I heard the TV. => After I woke up, I heard the TV.
- Inspite of working all day, I could not finish my project. => Although I worked all day, I could not finish my project.
